Bangladesh fight back after Mitchell Starc tears through top order in Mackay

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64 as Mitchell Starc played chief destroyer, producing a brilliant spell of swing bowling to claim 6-12, including the first five wickets in just 22 balls, as the hosts' left-arm quicks made full use of a lively, bouncy surface.

Australia's response, however, quickly unravelled as Bangladesh hit back through Shoriful Islam, who also claimed a six-wicket haul, producing career-best figures of 6-35 to reduce the hosts to 165-8 at stumps.

Australia still lead by 101 runs, however, with Cameron Green unbeaten on 51 and Nathan Lyon on 10.

The hosts were looking to respond strongly after their stunning nine-wicket defeat in Darwin left them 1-0 down in the two-Test series.

Captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl, backing his pace attack on a wicket prepared to offer conditions reminiscent of the Gabba.

Starc delivered in spectacular fashion, tearing through Bangladesh's top order before wrapping up the innings shortly after lunch.

But Shoriful, recalled after missing the first Test with a hamstring injury, ensured Australia would not enjoy a straightforward reply.

He dismissed Travis Head for 22 and Marnus Labuschagne for four before trapping Steve Smith lbw for 44, ending a 77-run partnership with Green.

Shoriful's six-wicket haul was his first in Test cricket and dragged Bangladesh back into the contest after their disastrous first innings - although the hosts have their noses in front.
