Nienaber praises Lions' pedigree as Leinster prepare for Ellis Park test

Speaking during a teleconference ahead of the clash, Nienaber was clear-eyed about the quality of the opposition and the difficulty of the assignment facing the Irish side.

"The Lions are a good team, and everybody would say that," he said. "They won the South African conference [in the 2025-26 season].

"There's been a South African team in the final in each of the last five finals, so it's a tough task to come to South Africa, and to the Lions as well.

"It's going to be a nice challenge for us, and one that we're definitely looking forward to."

The former Springboks head coach went further in assessing the Lions' character and the unique demands of playing at Ellis Park.

"The Lions are a very proud team, and they're a force to be reckoned with, as they showed when they played against the All Blacks," Nienaber added. "Ellis Park is a ground where they really put their heart and soul into defending. So it will be a nice challenge for us."

Nienaber's comments reflect the respect Leinster hold for the South African sides in the URC.

The Lions' strong conference form last season and the consistent presence of South African teams in recent finals have established a clear pattern of competitiveness that visiting European sides must confront.

For Leinster, the trip to Johannesburg offers both a physical and mental examination, with Ellis Park's reputation as a fortress where the home side digs in defensively.

The challenge will severely test the Irish province's ability to break down organised resistance under pressure.

While the Irish side enters most matches as favourites, Nienaber's measured praise of the Lions suggests his side will not underestimate the scale of the task in Johannesburg this Saturday.
