The Algerian Football Federation [FAF] confirmed the appointment of the former Marseille and Rangers defender on Saturday, after parting ways with Vladimir Petkovic a month ago.
Petkovic left his role with the senior men's team after leading Algeria to the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals and the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
"The FAF wishes him [Hemdani] and his staff every success and assures them of its full support in carrying out their mission," read the Algerian federations statement.
He is set to be joined by former Algeria international defender Antha Yahia [assistant coach], Nacer Daineche [fitness coach] and Nasredine Berarma [goalkeeper coach] in his technical team.
Hemdani will lead the Fennec Foxes when they start their AFCON 2027 Group I fixtures Zambia at the Stade Hocine Ait Ahmed in Tizi-Ouzou on 25 September before travelling to face Burundi in Bujumbura four days later.
