Brentford punish Chelsea in derby rout

Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored after the break as Brentford extended their unbeaten start to the campaign to five matches. The result also gave them their first-ever home Premier League victory over Chelsea.

Chelsea had the better of the opening stages, with Pedro Neto forcing a save from Caoimhin Kelleher, but the visitors struggled to create clear chances after that.

Brentford gradually grew into the game, with Yehor Yarmolyuk testing Emiliano Martinez from distance before Morgan Rogers and Keane Lewis-Potter went close towards the end of the first half.

The home side stepped up the pressure after the interval and finally broke through just after the hour mark.

Mikkel Damsgaard delivered a dangerous corner and Jannik Schuster headed the ball back across goal, allowing Anthony to finish from close range.

Chelsea were forced to attack in search of an equaliser, but that left spaces for Brentford to exploit on the counter.

Kevin Schade raced clear with 10 minutes remaining and, although Martinez kept out his initial effort, Thiago reacted quickest to fire home the rebound and score his first league goal of the season.

Brentford then completed the rout in stoppage time when Schade's cross found Carvalho at the far post and the substitute bundled the ball into the net.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews was delighted with the way his players handled a Chelsea side packed with attacking talent.

"There's a lot made of us around set pieces," Andrews told Sky Sports. "I thought they were very respecting in the way they set up against us, they didn't want to give Thiago any space.

"We had to earn the right to play, we had to be disciplined without the ball given the amount of talent they have and I thought we were very good tonight."

Andrews was particularly pleased with Thiago, who had been waiting for his first Premier League goal of the campaign.

"It's an amazing goal," he said. "It's a calm finish considering he hasn't notched in the league yet. His overall game tonight was sensational."

The Brentford boss was also delighted to see Carvalho score after his long recovery from an ACL injury.

"He's just a special soul. He's a brilliant story," Andrews said. "The way he sniffs out goals - he's a goalscorer, he feels it.

"I'm so happy for him because he's worked so hard to get back into a good rhythm. I think you should enjoy it. There's so many tough times and you have to enjoy the moments."

The victory leaves Brentford unbeaten after five games, with two wins and three draws, while Chelsea suffered their first Premier League match without scoring since April.

Andrews believes the result reflects the attitude developing inside his Brentford squad.

"I felt like there was something bubbling towards tonight and I have this unbelievable calm around our team because I trust them," he said.

"I see a humility and hunger within the group and we can challenge each other. We have to continue to get better in this league. What we do every day in training is pushing boundaries, be open with each other and continue to go on this journey - and I'm loving the journey."
