Ime Okon reveals frustration after unforgettable FIFA World Cup debut for Bafana

The 22-year-old defender made his long-awaited debut on football's biggest stage as South Africa returned to the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010. However, instead of celebrating a dream occasion, Okon was left reflecting on a frustrating 2-0 loss at the Estadio Azteca.

South Africa's return to the global stage got off to a disappointing start against the co-hosts, who capitalised on key moments to secure victory and put early pressure on Hugo Broos' side in Group A.

The defeat became even more damaging after Bafana finished the match with nine men following second-half red cards for Siphephelo Sithole and veteran midfielder Themba Zwane.

Speaking after the game, Okon admitted his first World Cup appearance was not the memory he had hoped to take away.

"Yeah, I think it was a good season, yes, and today also, I think it's not a debut I'd want to remember at the World Cup," Okon told Sporty TV.

"I think we just need to keep fighting. We trust each other. All of us worked so hard to be here and, yeah, it's on to the next one."

Despite the disappointment, Okon insisted there were positives to take from the performance and believes the squad has enough character to respond.

"Yeah, I mean, it was a tough game, but I thought we fought well. We competed and managed to contain them at times," he added.

"I just think we couldn't apply the finishing touch, but that's what we're working on. We have to keep looking forward and stay positive."

Bafana Bafana now face a crucial encounter against Czech next Thursday, with both nations desperate to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.
