Joao Gomes: First Champions League appearance for Aston Villa 'dream come true'

The midfielder was handed a starting place and delivered an assured performance, setting up Emiliano Buendia for Villa's second goal during a demanding contest.

"A dream come true. Being able to play a Champions League game for the first time in my career is one of those moments you'll never forget," he said.

"I'm glad it came with a win and that I was able to play well. It's the competition every player of my generation grew up watching, with the big games and the great performances from Brazilian and world football stars."

The result also marked an excellent beginning to Villa's European campaign, with Gomes pleased by how the team handled the difficult circumstances away from home.

Gomes believes reaching the knockout stage is firmly within Villa's sights, making the three points in Belgium particularly valuable.

The 24-year-old already looks settled at Villa, and the club will now return home for their next two Champions League fixtures, both of which will be staged at Villa Park.

With their supporters behind them, Gomes says Villa will be determined to build on their opening success. He insists the team will give everything to win both matches and secure another six points as they pursue their European ambitions.

"I'm very happy to be able to contribute to Aston Villa's journey," he added.

"It was a tough game, on a tight pitch and with the supporters putting pressure on us all the time. But we behaved in an exemplary way from the first minute to the last.

"Our objective is clear: to reach the knockout stage. There's nothing better than starting with three points away from home.

"Now we have two games in a row at Villa Park in front of our supporters. We're going all out to get another two wins."
