Malick Fofana joins Sunderland from Lyon in deadline-day move

Fofana has committed to a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light, becoming Sunderland's fifth arrival of the off-season. He began his senior career with KAA Gent before moving to Lyon in 2024, and will now continue his development in the Premier League.

The Belgian-born attacker joins Kevin Danso in making the switch to Sunderland on the final day of the transfer window, adding further attacking quality to Regis Le Bris' squad.

"Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League," said Sunderland's Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi.

"He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper.

"He operates off the left and will complement the versatility of the other wide men we have at the club, who can play across both flanks.

"We are delighted to welcome Malick to the club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career."

Sunderland have also recruited 18-year-old Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo from Independiente del Valle on a permanent basis, while Thomas Meunier, Dayann Methalie and Jules Ahoka have also arrived.

The Black Cats finished seventh in their first campaign back in the top flight last season and are preparing for their first European adventure since 1973. They began the 2026-27 Premier League season with defeat at Ipswich but responded by beating Fulham on Sunday.
