Ronwen Williams reveals Sundowns' ultimate Intercontinental Cup ambition

Sundowns will begin their campaign against Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ahli at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, knowing victory would move them one step closer to a showdown with the UEFA Champions League winners.

The Brazilians qualified for the competition after winning the CAF Champions League last season, while Al-Ahli secured their place in the next round by beating Auckland FC in the play-off.

PSG, meanwhile, have received a bye into the final of the six-team competition, leaving Sundowns with two matches to win before they can face the European champions.

Williams is excited by the prospect of playing PSG but knows Sundowns must first overcome a strong Al-Ahli side.

"It will be an open game and the winner takes all. It will be African Champions versus the Asian Champions," Williams told the Sundowns media team.

"It's the pathway to playing the UEFA Champions League winners which is Paris Saint-Germain and that's the ultimate goal but the first step now is against Al-Ahli and we're excited."

The Bafana Bafana captain also warned his teammates that chances could be limited against Al-Ahli and stressed the importance of being clinical in front of goal.

"At the World Cup, Club World Cup and CAF Champions League, you're not going to get too many chances. You need to make sure that the chance you get, you bury," Williams added.

"Their strikers are clinical and we have seen it with Ivan Toney and Francisco Trincao. That is something to be aware of and be alert and know that when they get opportunities they will punish you."

Williams also expects Al-Ahli to pay close attention to Teboho Mokoena, whose performances on the international stage have made him one of Sundowns' key players.

"Teboho scored at the World Cup, AFCON and all the big tournaments that we have played so I'm sure they will keep an eye on him," he continued.

"You could see their media started checking up on our players and the player they mention was Mokoena for obvious reasons. The number of goals that he has scored from midfield so it will be an interesting game."
