Teenage star Max Dowman nets brace to send Arsenal past Ipswich in Carabao Cup

Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman was the standout performer, scoring twice as Arsenal secured their place in the fourth round after a heavily rotated contest.

Both sides made major alterations to their starting line-ups, with 19 changes combined from their respective Premier League fixtures at the weekend. Arsenal handed first starts of the campaign to Dowman and 17-year-old centre-back Marli Salmon.

Dowman needed only seven minutes to make his mark. After winning possession in midfield, the teenager exchanged passes with Eberechi Eze before surging towards goal. He left two defenders on the turf and then coolly finished, sending the Ipswich goalkeeper the wrong way.

Noni Madueke doubled Arsenal's advantage when Mikel Merino lifted a flicked pass over the Ipswich defence, allowing Madueke to finish the move.

Dowman added his second after the interval, bringing Martin Zubimendi's pass under control before calmly guiding the ball into the far bottom corner.

Merino then restored Arsenal's three-goal cushion with a strike that found the net via the inside of the post.

"He was unbelievable again; some of the actions and connections that he can give us on the pitch are just a joy to watch," Arteta told the club's official website.

"He was really efficient; he's getting more and more active in action; he can sustain for longer periods, and we know the talent that we have."

Ipswich managed to make the closing stages uncomfortable when Anis Mehmeti converted Jack Clarke's pass before Chuba Akpom produced a composed turn and finish to reduce the deficit to two.

However, the hosts' late response came too late to force a change in the result, with Arsenal seeing out the victory.

Arsenal will discover their fourth-round opponents on Wednesday, with the draw scheduled to take place after Manchester United's meeting with Brighton.
