Jurgen Klopp begins Germany rebuild with bold squad overhaul

Rather than immediately settling on a first-choice side, Klopp has divided his players into two largely different squads for Germany's four Nations League matches. The first group will face the Netherlands and Greece before a second selection takes on Serbia and Greece.

Klopp said the approach is designed to give him a broader understanding of his players.

"I want to get to know as many players as possible," he said. "There is no A or B team."

The appointment has already made an impression on Germany's newcomers.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Younes Ebnoutalib said Klopp's involvement helped convince him to choose Germany rather than Morocco, whom he had represented at youth level.

"There were also talks with Morocco, but they weren't as intense as with Jurgen," Ebnoutalib said.

Freiburg defender Philipp Treu is another player relishing the opportunity to work under Klopp, while teammate Max Rosenfelder described the new coach as someone who quickly connects with people.

Klopp's willingness to look beyond established stars has also brought players such as Felix Keidel and Mika Baur into the picture, reflecting his stated desire to assess a wider pool of talent.

One of Klopp's first major decisions was choosing Marc-Andre ter Stegen as Germany's goalkeeper following Manuel Neuer's international retirement.

Ter Stegen has endured significant injury problems and had not played for Germany since June 2025, but a return to regular football has earned him another opportunity.

"It's always something special for me, to be here again now," Ter Stegen said. "I'm just happy to be 100 percent back."
