Eric Chelle reveals why Nigeria struggled in Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria were beaten 3-0 in Bissau just three days after securing a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar, leaving Chelle's side with three points from their opening two Group L matches.

The hosts took control early on and were rewarded when Franculino Dju opened the scoring before Mama Balde and Alvaro Djalo added further goals after the break to complete a convincing victory.

Chelle did not shy away from Nigeria's shortcomings after the final whistle, admitting that Guinea-Bissau were superior in several important areas.

"They were more aggressive than us; they were better than us," he said, as quoted by Pulse Sports Nigeria.

The coach also highlighted the playing conditions in Bissau, although he stressed that they could not be used to justify the result.

"Though this is not an excuse, they know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch, but for us, it was the first time, and the pitch was very bad. The weather was very hot too," he added.

"So, Guinea-Bissau entered the game more motivated and more aggressive. They put more intensity, and we never found a solution."

Nigeria attempted to change the momentum after the interval, but Chelle admitted that the response lasted only a short period.

"We tried to go forward after halftime, to bring something new, but after 10 minutes, we stopped, and I don't know why," he said.

The result represents a disappointing turn of events for Nigeria after their comeback against Madagascar had appeared to provide positive momentum for the team.

With only three points from their first two qualifiers, the Super Eagles now have work to do before their next Group L assignments.

Nigeria will return to action in November when they face Tanzania in a double-header as Chelle looks to address the shortcomings exposed in Bissau.
