Kaizer Chiefs star Luke Baartman targets consistency with Under-23's

Baartman is among a group of highly rated youngsters called up to the South Africa Under-23 squad, which is preparing for two international friendly matches against Algeria in Bloemfontein this week. The first encounter is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, at the Petrus Molemela Stadium.

The 20-year-old has already represented South Africa at Under-17 and Under-20 level, and his latest call-up gives him another opportunity to establish himself in a generation hoping to take the country back to the Olympic stage.

However, Baartman understands that his international ambitions are closely linked to what he produces for Chiefs.

The former Cape Town Spurs player has enjoyed an encouraging start to the season under new coach Fernando Da Cruz, featuring regularly for Amakhosi. He has made eight appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

"I don't want to say good start, but a great start for me, for playing all of the games so far in the league. It's just for me to keep on working and keep on getting game time," Baartman told the media.

"If you don't play, you are not going to get called up. So, it's for me to work and keep on playing."

With the 2027 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) serving as the qualifying tournament for the Olympics, competition for places is expected to intensify once the qualifiers begin, with a host of South Africa's top young talents included in the squad for the friendly matches.

They include Baartman's Kaizer Chiefs teammate Mfundo Vilakazi, Orlando Pirates trio Simphiwe Selepe, Mpho Padime and Camrin Dansin, as well as Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Kutlwano Letlhaku, among others.
