Pitso Mosimane reveals why Yanela Mbuthuma earned Bafana Bafana call-up

Pitso Mosimane reveals why Yanela Mbuthuma earned Bafana Bafana call-up

Mosimane, who took over as Bafana head coach following the departure of Hugo Broos, has included Mbuthuma in his final squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.

The call-up marks the 24-year-old's first return to the senior national team since June 2025.

Mbuthuma has faced criticism from Pirates supporters this season, particularly over his lack of goals and assists. However, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has continued to show faith in the striker.

The former Richards Bay forward has recently found his scoring touch, netting twice in the league while also providing assists in the MTN8 as Pirates reached a fifth successive final. He has also made an impact in the CAF Champions League.

Mosimane believes Mbuthuma offers more than just goals and says his physical presence, hunger and overall contribution were among the factors behind his selection.

"Well, I don't know what other people are saying and I don't know why people brand him as an enemy," said Mosimane during a press conference.

"I think he's a national team player. He scores goals for Orlando Pirates. I think you've seen him scoring few goals in Orlando Stadium. And yes, maybe he's not scoring as much as you want, but he does score and he's got a physical presence also and he's hungry."

With competition for places in the national team attack remaining strong, Mbuthuma will be hoping his return can lead to a sustained run in Mosimane's plans.

He will also look to build on the momentum from his recent performances as Bafana continue their progress following their historic run at the FIFA World Cup which saw them reach the knockout stages earlier this year.
