Betway Premiership: Five talking points ahead of the weekend's action

The league action is in full swing again with Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu looking to stay in the title chasing pack while five teams target their first victories of the new season.

New Mamelodi Sundowns signings

Masandawdana have unveiled two new signings ahead of their clash against Chippa United on Saturday, with right-back Deano van Rooyen and midfielder Thabo Cele joining the club.

Both players are fit and available to feature against the Chilli Boys with many supporters waiting in anticipation of the former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs players debuts for the African champions following their surprise moves.

Kaizer Chiefs defensive issues

Amakhosi have conceded five goals in their last three league matches which has caused some concern for head coach Fernando Da Cruz following a number of injuries to defensive players.

The Frenchman has openly urged his side not to give away chances to the opponents following their 3-2 victory against Siwelele but is expected to have a number of players back from injury to bolster their defence.

Chiefs will look to keep their first clean sheet after three matches when they battle Polokwane City on Saturday.

Can Ngwenya continue his scoring streak for AmaZulu?

Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has already broken the record for the longest scoring streak at the start of the PSL season, having scored in all five Betway Premiership matches and in Usuthu's MTN8 exit against Sekhukhune United.

Ngwenya will be expected to extend his scoring streak when his team faces the struggling Marumo Gallants, who will be led by interim head coach Trevor Mathiane after the sacking of Phuti Mohafe and assistant Musa Bilankulu.

Will Siwelele, Gallants improve after coaching changes?

Siwelele became the first club to wield the coaching axe this week after relieving Lehlohonolo Seema and assistant coach Willem Jackson of their duties, citing an unsatisfactory start to the season.

The club has already suffered a 3-0 drubbing under caretaker coach Godfrey Mosoetsa in their midweek clash against Mamelodi Sundowns and will be looking to turn the tide when they face Golden Arrows on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Gallants dismissed Phuti Mohafe after five winless opening matches of the 2026/27 season and will be looking for a positive result with interim coach Trevor Mathiane against an impressive AmaZulu side in Durban on Saturday.

Another KwaZulu-Natal derby

Milford FC will take on Richards Bay in the fourth fixture between KZN based sides in the 2026/27 campaign with the PSL newcomers looking to maintain their good start to the season that sees them in fifth spot on the league table.

Meanwhile, the Natal Rich Boys will be keen to avenge last weekend's derby defeat to Richards Bay and attempt to claim their first win of the season.
