The 21-year-old began his senior Switzerland career on a memorable note when he started against North Macedonia in a UEFA Nations League fixture on September 26. Switzerland claimed a 3-0 victory, with Athekame setting up both of Zeki Amdouni's goals on his international debut.
Athekame was born in Geneva and qualifies to represent Nigeria through his Nigerian father. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had been keeping tabs on his situation and reportedly wanted to persuade him to commit his future to the Super Eagles.
However, his involvement against North Macedonia appears to have settled the matter, with Nigeria manager Eric Chelle no longer including the AC Milan-owned right-back in his plans.
Athekame, who plays for Lyon, earned his senior opportunity after making an impressive start to the campaign. He had registered two goals and two assists across five Ligue 1 outings, prompting Switzerland boss Murat Yakin to promote him to the senior squad.
The defender had previously represented Switzerland extensively at youth level, making 17 appearances for the U21 side. He was also an unused substitute during a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Slovenia in October 2025.
Nigeria has experienced similar setbacks with several other dual-nationality targets, including Manuel Akanji, Noah Okafor, Simon Sohm, Isaac Schmidt and Eseosa Aigbogun.
